2024 US Pension Risk Transfers

LIMRA reports that the total pension risk transfer buyout premiums for 2024 were $48.1 Billion. 2024 transactions included several very large transactions: $6 billion for IBM, $5.9 billion for Verizon, and $4.9 billion for Shell. All three of these pension risk transfers were with Prudential Insurance Company of America. Prudential has done more than $100 billion in pension risk transfers since 2011, and has done 7 of the 10 largest transactions. Another notable transaction from 2024 was 3M’s $2.5 billion transfer to MetLife’s subsidiary, Metropolitan Tower Life Insurance Company.
