According to LIMRA, pension risk transfer buy-outs were down in the third quarter of 2025, with just $5.2 billion in transactions. Totals for the 4th quarter of 2025 should be available in March 2026.
In its third-quarter earnings call, MetLife stated that it had done $12 billion in pension risk transfer deals in 2025, and expected that it would have a record year, with more than $14 billion in “a few large deals.” This includes a $1.8 billion transaction with Eastman Kodak.
LIMRA reports that the total pension risk transfer buyout premiums for 2024 were $48.1 Billion. 2024 transactions included several very large transactions: $6 billion for IBM, $5.9 billion for Verizon, and $4.9 billion for Shell.
